Jessie Top/Dress by 5 Out Of 4 Patterns

Edit to add: EXCITING NEWS!

Jessie receive an update and now the Full Bust Adjustment is available as a pattern piece! To check the fit, I made a new one the same style as my others in Grayson Liverpool from Amelia Lane Designs

Edit to add photos of my latest Jessie dresses (exactly the same alterations as my muslin below).

Sydney scuba fabric from Amelia Lane Designs

Bassett Rayon Spandex Fabric from Amelia Lane Designs

I made this version in blue houndstooth scuba from Amelia Lane Designs. It’s not the scuba I’m used too. It’s the weight of ponte and both sides are smooth like the inside of Liverpool. I really like how this version came out! One thing about reusing a pattern you have perfected though, you really notice if your measurements change even in the slightest!

This one is the Magnolia Liverpool from Amelia Lane Designs. I used black dbp for the neckband, also from ALD.

During 5oo4’s Spring Dress Tour and Sale I found one pattern I surprisingly didn’t have! The Jessie top/dress. I am not sure how or why I skipped or missed buying it in all the previous sales, but I went to make it and discovered I didn’t own it.

So I snapped it up and got to printing. Because it’s an older pattern, it doesn’t have the built in full bust adjustment like all of the newer 5oo4 patterns. So I did a FBA (here’s my tutorial I use) and graded sizes and decided to be responsible and make a muslin first. That way I can check fit and also get an idea for fabric requirements.

I had a 1.5 yard cut of rayon spandex from the remnant bin at JoAnns and I managed to get this dress out of that with basically nothing left. That’s really fabric frugal for me since I’m a 2xl. I am actually an XL upper bust with FBA and then about halfway between XL and 2XL for the waist to a 2XL hip. I just looked at the size chart and saw how close I was to each size.

I used athletic brushed poly from Amelia Lane Designs for the neckband. It has really awesome recovery and the Caribbean color matched perfectly.

I am pretty familiar with grading 5oo4 and the measurement/size chart is super accurate so it makes it easy to adjust when I change sizes with weight flux. I mean, I got this muslin perfect on the first try, so it was obviously super accurate.

Since the fit is perfect, now this dress is an excellent canvas for hacking. I have a few go-to patterns that I like for being basic but well-fitting so that I can make my dreams come to life!

So far I’ve hacked this pattern to have a choker and to have a handkerchief hem!

Here’s the choker blog post.
